MAYWOOD, N.J. -- Teaneck resident Michael Zier is a self-described "coffee guy," which is why taking ownership of Maywood's Moon Doggie in July and transforming it into Stray Cat Brew is a dream come true.

The former Moon Doggie employee, who was born in Englewood, has been in the coffee business for a long time including at three different Dunkin' Donuts operations, but always preferred working the front of the house, as opposed to the back. Now that he has his own place, his goal is to make the coffee experience a special one.

First and foremost, he stressed, the coffee is not changing. "We are still serving the award-winning Moon Doggie coffee that has won accoldades from many local and regional sites over the last 11 years," he said. "Frozen drinks, like Frozen Hot Chocolate and Frozen Blended Coffees, are complimented by freshly made espresso drinks. And the locally-roasted coffee is still available to take home as well."

What customers will find, however, are new drinks and a hipper atmosphere. Among the new options: cold-brewed iced coffee and a house specialty, the Black-Out iced coffee, the cafe's signature iced coffee served over frozen coffee ice cubes (so that the drink doesn't get watered down as the ice melts).

Zier is also concentrating on reorganizing the store to make it fit the brand and has plans to expand the menu, including adding food options and more drinks.

As for the Stray Cat name, Zier said it started as a joke referencing the former name of the establishment. "But the cool cat in the logo also embodies the spirit that I want the place to have. Clean, modern, and also a little hip," he said.

Stray Cat Brew is at 108 W. Pleasant Ave., (201) 682-6306 and open seven days a week.
