Artistic Director Greg Liosi told Daily Voice the Performing Arts Center will vacate its 117-seat theater at 39 Broadway at the end of the year for a new, 224-seat theater at 102 State Street.
"I'm ridiculously excited," Liosi told Daily Voice. "This will be a gorgeous new facility that is the perfect size for us."
The city bought 102 State Street in 2012 and has bonded $1.5 million for its refurbishment. The facility used to be a Masonic temple.
The new performing arts center will be a two-story building. On the first floor will be a multi-purpose room, kitchen, public restrooms, dressing rooms, coat room, box office and ticket booth. On the second floor will be a pre-function lobby, concession area, control rooms and the theater. The building will also have new plumbing and an elevator.
It is the perfect space to house the seven theater companies that the performing arts center works with, Liosi said.
"We sell out quite often now and I think we will carry a lot of momentum into this new space," he said.
The facility can also be used for movie screenings, galas, and concerts, Liosi said.
The city plans to begin the redevelopment in June, with an eye for a January 2017 opening.
