Last year, for instance, more than 24,000 people in New Jersey were hospitalized with C0-related issues, state authorities reported.
The owner and operator of Liberty Heating & Air Conditioning in his hometown, Bayer hopes to help homeowners become more aware of the dangers by giving away free carbon monoxide detectors to anyone who hires his company for heating system maintenance or installation.
"Appliances fueled with gas, oil, kerosene, or wood may produce carbon monxide," said Bayer, 34, who launched his business 17 years ago. "If such appliances are not installed, maintained, and used properly, CO may accumulate to dangerous and even deadly levels in homes.
"Basically we are giving back to the community."
Bayer's company also tests the CO levels as homeowners and merchants prepare their heating systems for winter.
